Bhattarai revives Nepal Monarchy debate once again

२९ बिहिबार , माघ २०७१११ बर्ष अगाडि

The Unified Maoists leader Baburam Bhattarai, who had once proposed to retain the institution of monarchy in a ‘cultural form’, has accused the ruling parties of conspiring to revive the totally sidelined institution of monarchy.

Former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal when he was still in office, August, 2010 is on record to have said that the Maoists were conspiring to revive the institution of monarchy in the form of a cultural king.

“The ruling parties want to strangulate the Constituent Assembly and with that revive the old order with monarchy restored,” said Bhattarai addressing a press meet in Jumla district, Thursday.

By implication perhaps.

On Wednesday, Baburam had claimed that the United Marxist Leninist Chairman KP Oli is presenting himself as new Junga Bahadur (dictator).

Recent rumors had it that Baburam with the tacit support of Nepal’s last King Gyanendra Shah was launching a new political party. However, he later rebuked rumors by claiming that it was a mere propaganda to malign his brilliant political credentials.

"It is a mere propaganda that I was launching a new party with the support of the former King," tweeted Baburam.

"I will not compromise on national independence, republic, federalism, secularism, inclusive-proportionate and participatory democratic order," Baburam had also clarified.

While he was the prime minister, Baburam is also on record to have threatened the former King to put him behind bars if he kept himself engaged in political activities.

Baburam loves to talk of the almost forgotten Monarchy! Strange!

Bhattarai in Jumla however, maintained that there is no alternative to consensus between political parties-- as the country cannot withstand another round of conflict.

When asked to reveal the objective behind his trip to Jumla this time, he replied, “I am here to seek public suggestion on how to draft a progressive and forward looking constitution for the country.”
