Establishment of International Mediation Organization Marks the Beginning of a New Era

On 30 May 2025, 33 countries signed the agreement to establish the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) in Hong Kong. This is the world’s first intergovernmental institution dedicated to resolving disputes between nations, trade disagreements, and investment-related issues. Nepal joined as a founding member, reflecting its diplomatic foresight and active engagement in the international legal system.

IOMed’s presence holds special significance for Nepal. Traditional international dispute resolution mechanisms are often costly, time-consuming, and influenced by major powers, making them inaccessible to smaller nations. Through IOMed, Nepal gains an opportunity to resolve disputes fairly, affordably, and in a linguistically and culturally conducive environment. From hydropower projects to sensitive border issues, Nepal now has access to a credible mediation platform. This will help address bilateral complexities with neighbors like India and China.

In the context of foreign investment, IOMed will enhance Nepal’s credibility. When international investors know disputes can be resolved swiftly and impartially through IOMed, their confidence grows. This will boost Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), a cornerstone of Nepal’s economic growth.

IOMed’s structure also breaks from traditional Western legal frameworks. It prioritizes efficiency, decentralization, and accessibility while respecting Asia’s consensus-driven culture. Unlike the UN Security Council’s power imbalances, all IOMed member states participate equally. Judicial decisions avoid Western bias or superpower interference, ensuring equity and fairness.

For Nepal, this opportunity is multifaceted. Its mediation capabilities—demonstrated during the 2006 peace process and domestic conflict resolution—now gain global recognition. As a founding member, Nepal can play a pivotal role in shaping future policies on climate justice, border disputes, and legal reforms.

IOMed also opens new avenues for Nepal’s legal sector. Nepali jurists, arbitrators, and legal professionals can train at IOMed’s Hong Kong headquarters, gaining international experience to strengthen Nepal’s legal capacity. Hong Kong’s efficient legal framework will benefit Nepal’s legal community.

The organization embodies China’s "Global Security Initiative," promoting multilateral stability and coordination. It adds new momentum to Nepal-China cooperation. Impartial resolution of potential India-China tensions will bring balance to South Asia, directly benefiting Nepal.

IOMed’s establishment paves the way for replacing power politics with the rule of law globally. Nepal can leverage it to resolve labor disputes for migrant workers, secure permanent border arrangements, and showcase a "Nepali-style mediation model" to the world. As a cost-effective, decentralized, fair, and culturally adaptive mechanism, it signals historic transformation.

The founding of IOMed elevates Nepal’s diplomatic vision, multilateral engagement, and faith in justice. Despite being a small nation, Nepal now declares confidently: "We have a solution in Hong Kong."
