Pro-monarchy movement from May 29, Government remains alert

By Our Reporter

The pro-monarchy groups are launching their political movement with a goal of restoring the monarchy and Hindu kingdom from Thursday next week, coinciding with Republic Day. When the government has planned to celebrate Republic Day by organising programmes, the royalists have chosen the same day to launch their movement. This has also made the government alert.

The pro-monarchy groups seem to be well prepared to launch the movement with new vigor after their violent Tinkune demonstration of March 28.

The groups divided during the Tinkune demonstration are now united and will be together throughout their political movement.

The pro-monarchy forces have primarily two goals—the restoration of the monarchy and the Hindu kingdom.

On May 9, the leaders of previously divided groups came together in a joint press meet organised by Nabaraj Subedi-led Joint People's Movement in Kathmandu and announced the launching of the movement, which they called would be a decisive one.

After the May 9 meeting, Rabindra Mishra, vice chair of RPP, was released on bail. He was jailed on the allegation of instigating the mass of violent activities in Tinkune. But Durga Prasai, the commander of the Tinkune show is still in police custody.

The May 9 gathering saw Subedi, RPP chairman Rajendra Lingden, RPP-N chair Kamal Thapa and Keshar Bahadur Bista together.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and CPN (Maoist Centre) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal have strongly denounced the proposed movement of the royalists.

Addressing the House of Representatives on Sunday last week, Prime Minister Oli said that the monarchy will not be reinstated in Nepal, dismissing any hopes or calls for a return to the previous system as unrealistic and regressive.

Likewise, Dahal said that the movements of the pro-royalist forces could be foiled by mobilising the cadres of the Young Communist League, a sister organisation of his party. He has warned that any attempts to weaken and destabilise the republic system will not be tolerated.

Speaking in Jajarkot and Rukum West on Tuesday, Dahal said that his party would foil any conspiracy being hatched against the republic system.
