75 Years Of Nepal-US Relations

२३ सोमबार , जेठ २०७९२ बर्ष अगाडि

Rajan Karki - -
Nepal and the United States of America established the diplomatic relations between them on 25 April 1947, opened its Kathmandu embassy in 1959.  Relations between the two countries have always been friendly. The United States has no vested interests in Nepal. U.S. policy objectives toward Nepal center on helping Nepal build a “peaceful, prosperous, and democratic society”.
In 2015, Nepal was in a state of disarray. The United States has provided over $190 million for earthquake relief, recovery, and reconstruction. The United States has assisted in the reconstruction of various schools and other structures from Basantapur Palace. The MCC has provided $ 50 million for energy and roads, and more aid through US aid for other infrastructure projects.
Mutual relations are becoming more and more conducive to modern civilization as the United States is interested in democratization in Nepal, poverty alleviation, economic development of Nepalis and independent identity in international relations.
Nepal is a small country located between China and India with huge area and population in the north and south. This country has always lived as an independent country. Due to its open border with India and geopolitical relations with China, Nepal has been pursuing a policy of equidistance. The influence of both countries is widespread in Nepal.
Relations with the UK date back to the Treaty of Sugauli in 1816. After the United States, relations were established with India on June 13, 1947 and with China on August 1, 1955. At present, Nepal has diplomatic relations with more than 155 countries.
But Nepal-US relations are considered particularly meaningful. According to the US Census Bureau, by the year 2000, there were 198,000 Nepalis living in the United States.
The relations between the two countries have been marked by friendliness, understanding, mutual support, cooperation and respect for each other’s sensitivities.
Of course, India is a neighbor with an open border. Therefore, India has a lot of influence. But due to Indian intervention and border encroachment, hatred towards the Indian government is equally high in the minds of the Nepalese people. There is no bitterness in the relations with China but Nepal’s credible trust has not been fulfilled. However, Nepal is a good neighbor of India and China. This relationship is guided by the goal of liberal democracy and global.
Economic development. In the days to come, Nepal has become an important partner with the interest of the West to lead development and democracy from underdeveloped Nepal. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States has moved forward with sensitivities in the areas of dictatorship, conflict, violence, heritage conservation, nature conservation, science, development and security.
Therefore, this relationship is appearing widely and actively. The United States is a world power. Democracy-recognized ideology and politics, diplomacy are America’s priorities. The question is, should diplomatic relations be able to protect mutual interests¿ The United States has been criticized for many things, but democratization is a human need. For Nepal, the question of how to deal with the emerging power of India, Nepal’s weak diplomacy linked to the emerging economic prosperity of China, and the opportunities, challenges and risks of entry even to the West, seems daunting.
Nepal, which has already passed the MCC by the parliament, is no longer a naval force. Political and diplomatic maturity is an essential condition of Nepal. Any kind of dictatorship, attack on law can be suicide.
After entering world politics, one gets a taste of development. Satisfaction is obtained. We must develop the capacity to address world politics in an independent, autonomous and sovereign manner. Otherwise, the opportunity may become a problem, the problem may become a crisis. The challenge is to make it impossible for Nepal to lose its diplomatic position.
Nepal became a member of the United Nations on December 14, 1955 – and it continues to contribute.  Nepal served twice in the United Nations Security Council as an elected non-permanent member, in 1969-70 and in 1988-1989. Currently, Nepal is serving as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC).
As committed to the United Nations Charter, it cannot compromise on the ideals and realities of world affairs. The concept of World Village has been developed. Climate change has become a common problem for all living things. Nuclear and space access has increased. Experts are working day and night to ensure modern studies and the survival of living things. In this case, the closed society has become something beyond imagination. Openness and transparency have become the norm.
Nepal’s past stance has become more urgent in its policy. Liberalism, democracy and capitalism are becoming global aspirations. Democracy is the ideology of both Nepal and the United States. Therefore, the pace of Nepali communism, which has become a fertile ground, seems to be improving. Communism cannot move forward as an alternative to democracy.
What has been seen in the past is communism due to anarchy and underdevelopment. Communism was also seen to oppose corruption, immorality and nepotism. The main agenda of the people was freedom, justice and peace building based on truth and even ideological consensus was disturbed by communism. As a result, good governance could not be established. Instability increased. The basic issues that Nepal has to learn from the United States are rule of law, management and rule of law.

Political conflicts erupt during elections. Conflict will be more visible in the upcoming parliamentary elections than in the local ones. Nepal needs foreign investment, technology, employment, production and export. Which can cope with rising trade deficits and economic downturns. This desire is possible only through liberalism and democracy. This is what America wants in Nepal, this is what Nepalis want. Nepal-US bilateral relations are 75 years old. In the meantime, many changes have taken place. There are glimpses and glimpses of new changes. Nepal has reached a new stage of progress.
Why not make full use of such opportunities to provide food to the hungry, shelter to the naked, shelter to the homeless?
