Greetings from Nepal.
Addressing the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2026, UN Secretary-General António Guterres recalled the warning he issued during his official visit to Nepal (October 29 – November 1, 2023) regarding the accelerating loss of Himalayan glaciers:
“Three years ago, in the mountains of Nepal, I sounded the alarm on accelerating glacier melt, warning that the rooftops of the world were caving in. Some dismissed it as overstating the dangers. But, as tragic events have demonstrated, the impacts are arriving sooner, hitting harder, and spreading further than many had anticipated.”
Against this backdrop, Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen addressed the international community on Thursday, September 24, at 8.15 PM, New York time. His address will emphasize the escalating challenges of the climate crisis, focusing on disaster risk reduction, community vulnerability, cryospheric transformations, and the preservation of fragile mountain ecosystems.

Our research investigates the nexus among Himalayan environmental and cryospheric degradation, cascading disaster risks, community vulnerability, transboundary environmental impacts, and frameworks of environmental, climate, and intergenerational justice. It aims to advance interdisciplinary academic discourse and inform policy responses to accelerating climate dynamics in the region.
This publication marks the 161st internationally published scholarly work of the lead author, contributing further to ongoing debates on disaster governance, climate adaptation, and climate justice for vulnerable mountain communities.
