SCHAUMBURG, IL – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) presented Pope Leo XIV with a custom Chicago Cubs jersey during a meeting at the Vatican last week.

The jersey featured “Da Pope” and the number 267, referring to Leo XIV as the 267th Bishop of Rome.

The gift led to a conversation about Chicago baseball, with Krishnamoorthi, a lifelong Cubs fan, recalling the Pope’s reaction to the Cubs jersey.

“When I presented Pope Leo the jersey, he immediately reminded me that the White Sox had lost the night before, on Pope Leo Day at Rate Field,” Krishnamoorthi said.

Krishnamoorthi said he then asked the Pope to “spread some of that love to the Cubs” and give the team a blessing to help its chances of an all-Chicago World Series.

“It was wonderful to see that even from the Vatican, the Pope still follows the Sox religiously,” Krishnamoorthi said.

Leo XIV is the first American pope.
