Upendra Mahato declared : Russia-Nepal-India triangle in the energy sector

Upendra Mahato invited Russia to participate in Nepal's hydropower project.

Upendra Mahato took part online in the SPIEF-2026 session "25 Years of the SCO: A New Stage in the Development of the Trade, Economic and Business Agenda".

The businessman emphasized that the SCO is the largest international regional organization in terms of geography, population, and opportunities. He highlighted Nepal's advantage as an SCO`s Dialog Partner, namely its good relations with its two large neighboring countries, India and China.

Mr. Mahato drew attention to the situation that has developed in Nepal itself, where, as a result of radical political changes, the country is now governed by a very young government, led by a 36-year-old prime minister. At the same time, two-thirds of parliament is controlled by a single party, which provides unique opportunities for maintaining stability and economic development.

Upendra Mahato recalled Nepal's main asset — its colossal potential in hydropower and electricity — noting that this takes on particular significance in the context of the issues of artificial intelligence and information and communication technologies in general, which are being actively discussed at SPIEF-2026.

The entrepreneur stated that Nepal's potential is very high, both in the field of domestic energy consumption, including for the creation of large data centers, and for its export to India and Bangladesh. He noted that the Himalayas and mountain rivers give Nepal the advantages of natural high water pressure and lower costs for reservoir construction. Inviting forum participants to investment cooperation, he noted that there are opportunities for capital investment in both energy production and power transmission lines.

Upendra Mahato declared that he advocates for the creation of a Russia-Nepal-India triangle in the energy sector.
