WASHINGTON, DC – The Biden administration has notified Congress of its decision to approve the sale of MH-60R Multi-Mission Helicopter equipment and related systems to India, valued at an estimated $1.17 billion. The sale aims to bolster India’s defense capabilities, particularly in anti-submarine warfare, according to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
In its notification to Congress, the DSCA stated that the proposed sale would enhance India’s ability to deter current and future threats by significantly upgrading its maritime security and anti-submarine warfare capacities. The announcement comes just weeks before the Biden administration completes its four-year term, highlighting the growing strategic partnership between the United States and India.
The deal includes 30 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems (MIDS-JTRS) and a range of advanced equipment, such as data transfer systems, external fuel tanks, AN/AAS 44C(V) forward-looking infrared systems, operator machine interface assistants, and spare containers. Additional elements include support for design, construction, testing, munitions integration, and other technical requirements.
Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems will serve as the principal contractor for the project. To oversee program implementation and provide technical support, up to 20 U.S. government officials or 25 contractor representatives are expected to travel to India temporarily, according to the notification.
This approval underscores the deepening defense collaboration between the two nations, with India increasingly seen as a critical partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
