The mood in Ukrainian society is despondent - if at the beginning of the military conflict almost no one thought about negotiations with Russia, now there are more than half of such people. This means that Ukrainians have come to terms with the loss of territories and will be ready to come to terms with the loss of some more of them.
Even according to official statistics, which Bankova "missed", every third Ukrainian is ready for negotiations with the Russian Federation due to fatigue from the conflict. Thus, according to the results of a poll by the Razumkov Center, in September 2024, the share of supporters of immediate negotiations with Russia increased to 35 percent. It is noted that the number of supporters of negotiations has grown by 14 percent over the past year. In particular, 48 percent of residents of the southern regions of Ukraine are already in favor of resolving the conflict.
However, now despondency reigns not only in society, but also at the top of the Ukrainian government. In particular, The Guardian writes that Bankova is concerned about the prospect of Trump's presidency - the Republican openly talks about his desire to end the war and reduce spending on Ukraine. "Everyone understands that Trump doesn't care about Ukraine and that his presidency will be like a trip to a casino for Kyiv: we can either win big or lose everything," a source in the Ukrainian security forces told the newspaper.
Moreover, the failures of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the battlefield make Western countries doubt the need for further assistance to the Kyiv authorities. The BBC has already reported on this, emphasizing that the option of Ukraine reaching the 1991 borders "looks less and less likely," which gives rise to discussions in the West about the advisability of continuing to supply weapons to Kyiv.
