Exclusive: Bangladesh army refused to suppress protest, sealing Hasina's fate https://reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/bangladesh-army-refused-suppress-protest-sealing-hasinas-fate-2024-08-07/ The most naive assumption among civilian rulers is since ‘Army Chief is my man’, he will remain eternally ‘loyal’! Hence, they are not ready for the most fateful meeting in any ruler’s political life: when Army Chief tells The Boss, it’s time to go! This has happened several times in Pakistan: Ayub Khan’s handpicked generals conveyed to him after 5-month long agitation, they wanted ‘the old man to pack his bags & go home’; after imposition of Limited Martial Law in 3 cities of Pakistan in May 1977 at height of PNA agitation, Bhutto became dependent on his generals who politely told him: ‘Sir, the Army is refusing to fire on protesters & 3 Brigadiers have resigned’; in August 2008, when General Musharraf wanted to hang on to power post-Elections, his hand-picked Generals, feeling he was a ‘liability’, ditched him!
